Scar Revision Q&A

What type of surgery is scar revision?

Scar revision is plastic surgery performed to improve the appearance or condition of a scar anywhere on your body.

Surgery can cosmetically improve discoloration or surface irregularities and other more subtle scars, as well as other treatments recommended by your Wistl Skin plastic surgeon.

What is the purpose of scar revision?

Scar revision is a procedure done on a scar to alter or improve the appearance of:

  • Elevated (or hypertrophic) scars
  • Depressed (or atrophic) scars
  • Textured skin
  • Redness
  • Hyperpigmentation from scarring

The revision may improve the cosmetic appearance, reduce itching, or restore function to a part of the body that may have been restricted.

What are the types of scar revision treatments?

Your provider plans your scar revision using techniques based on the scar’s features:

Elevated scars

Three steroid injections a week for four weeks can reduce elevated scars. Dermabrasion can also minimize hypertrophic tissue.

Scars with redness

Redness usually goes away eventually on its own, but Pulse Dyed laser treatments (V-beam) can get rid of it faster. Depending on the settings, treatment may have to be repeated 2-4 times, 4-6 weeks apart.

Textured and pigmented scars

Resurfacing lasers like an ablative fractional Co2 laser called Ultrapulse Active FX can minimize textured scar tissue. You need 2-4 treatments spaced six weeks apart, depending on the severity of the texture and pigment issues.

Depressed scars

Depressed scars (atrophy) are challenging to treat. The best treatment for depressed scars is usually a deep resurfacing laser.

Some semi-permanent injectable fillers can also diminish the appearance of depressed scars. Fillers work by adding soft volume under the skin, which can make up for the missing tissue in a scar. The results of fillers last for six months or longer, depending on the type you get.

Occasionally, the best treatment option for a depressed scar is a scar revision. The depressed portion of the scar is surgically removed, and the wound is sutured with a special technique.
